Politely Asking Your APEX Users to be Patient

High-load queries can overload servers when users repeatedly press buttons or links that initiate them. In this way, single users can crash relatively small server systems, or slow down larger systems. An easy way to prevent multiple clicks on buttons that initiate queries is needed in development platforms like Oracle Application Express. Ideally, such a solution provides some recognition to the user that their request is processing, instead of simply deactivating the button. Because jQuery is now built into Application Express by default, the jQuery plugin BlockUI can be very easily added to an application. This plugin greys out the screen and pops a box containing HTML that the developer can specify. This HTML can include a “Cancel” button which unblocks the page, along with a message to the user such as "Please Wait...". It can also include any image that the developer wants to accompany the message. With a single JavaScript include file added to the page template, this fix can be applied to any item by adding a class attribute to its HTML element. By editing button and page templates, developers can quickly apply BlockUI to every button and tab throughout an entire application. This plugin is far more robust, customizable, and versatile than solutions we have used in the past.
