HFM vs. Essbase BSO: A Comparative Anatomy
Keith Berry, US-Analytics

So, you're working on a joint HFM/Planning implementation and want them both to perform with lightening speed. What makes Essbase fast should work in HFM, right? Well, maybe! This presentation will compare in detail the inner workings of HFM and Essbase BSO and highlight the different strategies used by each system to process data. The session will discuss where familiar Essbase concepts such as dense/sparse, block size, dynamic calc, etc. apply to HFM and where they don't. The session will highlight the different design principles needed to optimize each system and touch on other issues (shared hierarchies, data integration) designers face on joint HFM/Planning/Essbase implementations.

Introducing Oracle Data Provider For .NET, Managed Driver
Alex Keh,
Oracle Corporation

The new 100% managed Oracle Data Provider for .NET (ODP.NET) greatly eases .NET application deployment. It is a single assembly that does not depend on any other Oracle client library. It is very lightweight in size, smaller than 10 MB. Migrating from the unmanaged to managed provider is a short, straightforward process. In this webinar, learn about ODP.NET, Managed Driver features, how to use the provider in new applications, how to migrate existing unmanaged ODP.NET applications to use the new managed driver, and how to deploy ODP.NET managed and unmanaged versions side by side.

Politely Asking Your APEX Users to be Patient

Anton Nielsen & Mike McConville, C2 Consulting

High-load queries can overload servers when users repeatedly press buttons or links that initiate them. In this way, single users can crash relatively small server systems, or slow down larger systems. An easy way to prevent multiple clicks on buttons that initiate queries is needed in development platforms like Oracle Application Express. Ideally, such a solution provides some recognition to the user that their request is processing, instead of simply deactivating the button. Because jQuery is now built into Application Express by default, the jQuery plugin BlockUI can be very easily added to an application. This plugin greys out the screen and pops a box containing HTML that the developer can specify. This HTML can include a “Cancel” button which unblocks the page, along with a message to the user such as "Please Wait...". It can also include any image that the developer wants to accompany the message. With a single JavaScript include file added to the page template, this fix can be applied to any item by adding a class attribute to its HTML element. By editing button and page templates, developers can quickly apply BlockUI to every button and tab throughout an entire application. This plugin is far more robust, customizable, and versatile than solutions we have used in the past.
