ODTUG Announces New Executive Director

ODTUG has named Veronica Snow as its new Executive Director.

“We are happy to welcome Veronica to the ODTUG team,” ODTUG President Monty Latiolais said. “From a continuity perspective, the choice was obvious. The organization is in great shape, and we are confident that the addition of Veronica will keep us on that path.”

“I am excited to become an active member of the ODTUG community, which is legendary for its passion and dedication to education and camaraderie,” Veronica said. “I also look forward to working with the Board of Directors and the ODTUG team to continue the tradition of success."

Veronica replaces outgoing ODTUG Executive Director Crystal Walton, who has served in the position since 2012.

Leadership Program Deadline Rapidly Approaching

ODTUG has long been recognized as an outstanding source for the technical content Oracle professionals desire, but starting today, that’s only half of the story. We’re providing our members with yet another avenue to add to their skills and increase their value to their employer or client. ODTUG is pleased to open enrollment for the third class of the ODTUG Leadership Program.

The Leadership Program is a nine-month journey consisting of monthly webinars on subjects ranging from leadership styles, effective communication, mentoring, and ethics to the challenges of leading volunteers. All meetings will be online. There will be a mandatory opening session in September, followed by monthly online meetings and a leadership project. An attendee may not miss more than two meetings.

The program will also cover the history of ODTUG from its very beginning to the remarkable success we enjoy today. You will graduate more confident and better equipped for that trek from member to leader.

The program is limited to an extremely small group of participants. As a part of the program, participants will receive a complimentary pass to ODTUG Kscope16, where you will bond with fellow participants – all while volunteering, learning more about ODTUG, and attending sessions. You must be a paid member to participate, but the program is free.

Sound interesting? Complete the online application. Don’t wait; enrollment ends August 14.

Developer, DBA Communities Merge into Database Community

We are merging! ODTUG’s Developer and DBA Communities are becoming one. This new association will be known as the Database Community. We are excited to see what these combined forces will bring about.

Although developer and administrator may have very different job descriptions, the roles clearly complement each other and are often synergistic. The most finely tuned database is not much use to the average end user without front-end applications, and an application with an inefficient back end is similarly not very useful. Each of these positions offers a different perspective on how to achieve the same goal. By working together, we all can learn and grow. This co-existence (or is it co-dependence?) was the driving force behind the decision to merge the two communities into one Database Community. Read more here.

Join the group for ODTUG’s first TwitChat on August 19 at noon EDT. Bring your database questions, tips, or just general camaraderie to Twitter for the chat, using the hashtag #odtugdb.

Transitioning from APEX 4 to 5: Time for a Huge Monitor
Scott Spendolini, Sumner Technologies

With APEX 5 here, it’s time to start getting ready for a whole new development environment: the Page Designer view. This new view looks and feels like more traditional desktop-based IDEs and can be intimidating to both new and seasoned APEX developers alike. However, with a little guidance, the benefits of it can be realized almost immediately.

This session will explore APEX 5’s new Page Designer view in detail, including the new methodologies used. It will also highlight how specific workflows in APEX 4 are now achieved in APEX 5, making the transition for existing APEX developers easier.

How to Drill from Essbase to Relational Data in OBIEE When Vertical Federation Is Not an Option
Krishna Marur,
Brother International

With the option to set the Essbase dimensions to value-based hierarchy so you don’t have to re-import your Essbase cube into OBIEE repository, you lose the functionality of vertical federation that lets you drill seamlessly from Essbase to relational data. If you want to take advantage of not having to re-import your frequently changing Essbase cube but still want to provide your users the functionality to drill into relational data, then attend this presentation. It will show you how to use action links to pass parameters from reports built using Essbase to reports built using relational database. Have you had your users ask you for hierarchical Essbase dimensions on dashboard prompts because that’s how they are used to selecting them in Smart View, yet you know that you cannot add a hierarchical column to the filters section of the report? This presentation will also show how to provide users with hierarchical prompts on dashboards and pass them to reports.

Oracle Transparent Data Encryption Baseline Practices
Robert Lockard,
Oraclewizard

This one-hour presentation includes how to, gotchas (where data can leak in clear text), and baseline practices for implementing Oracle Transparent Data Encryption. We will walk through setting up Oracle Transparent Data Encryption and establish baseline practices to secure your information, explaining where and how to encrypt the data, and where and how data leaks in plain text and HEX format. We will also explore these questions: When sending data to a standby database, when does the data stay encrypted and when can it transfer over the network in clear text? When using Oracle Streams, does data go across the network in clear text? When gathering statistics on encrypted data, where can the data be exposed unencrypted? As we discuss each of the leaks, we will also review how to mitigate the leakage and eliminate ghost data.
