How to Make FDMEE-Triggered Essbase Calculation and Partition Scripts Targeted to Current FDMEE Load
               Bernard Ash, EPM Clarity

Liberate ASO procedural calcs from admin ownership – make them runnable by end users from Smart View. We can do this, thanks to the Calc Manager CDF – MaxLScriptFunction – which allows us to run a MAXL script from a calculation script/business rule. Also with this approach, users could trigger a BSO calc and then subsequently refresh a partition to push the calc results to an ASO reporting cube.

Understanding and Using Essbase Web Services
Dayalan Punniyamoorthy, Vertical Edge

Services on cloud is the new mantra driving most of the Oracle EPM component to be accessed via the cloud. Of course, Essbase Web Services are not excluded from the list. They were introduced as a new feature in 11.1.2.2, as silent unnoticed functionality.

Essbase Web Services will expose Essbase user and administrative functionality in a services-oriented (SOA) environment via Provider Services and allow Essbase to be easily integrated with both Oracle and third-party applications.

Essbase Web Services include the following modules:

  • Datasource
  • Administration
  • Data and metadata

In this webinar, we will discuss how to get started with Essbase Web services and explore the variety of functionalities they offer us. Don’t miss this webinar if you want to learn a bit more about Essbase Web Services and how to customize them to meet your requirements.

Scaling to Infinity: Partitioning Data Warehouses on Oracle Database
Tim Gorman, Delphix

There is a lot of talk about big data, and it is often associated with Hadoop and other NoSQL databases. But SQL and Big Data are not mutually exclusive. There are petabyte-sized databases on Oracle Database, and this is how they happen.

This presentation is distilled from 15+ years of extensive experience implementing multi-terabyte databases to support data warehouses on the Oracle RDBMS. One of the most important technical decisions is how to implement partitioning within the Oracle RDBMS to optimize query performance for response time even as data volumes increase, and also to optimize data loading to maximize availability during data loading, eliminating downtime and minimizing impact on the system. Partitioning is also implemented to optimize storage by enabling compression and taking advantage of "tiered" storage strategies and READ ONLY tablespaces.

Partitioning is the key to unlock the full power of numerous advanced Oracle features for data warehousing in a way that is not explicitly documented by Oracle. This interlocked dependency between features is described by the presenter as the "virtuous cycle." Not starting with partitioning on a data warehouse project can lead to a deadlock of unfortunate circumstances that can doom the project to failure, which the instructor characterizes as the "death spiral." In fact, one of the most important query optimizations for data warehouses in Oracle known as "star transformations" is effectively unavailable without using properly implemented partitioning.

Save Time with FDM to FDMEE Migration Utility
Bernard Ash, EPM Clarity

Do you want to upgrade to FDMEE but you’re too afraid of the large number of FDM artifacts you have in FDM (locations, data load rules, import formats, validation rules, validation entities, etc.)? It would be very time-consuming and therefore expensive and error-prone to migrate all those artifacts from FDM to FDMEE. The bad news is that artifacts such as custom reports and VBScripts will not be migrated; you will have to convert those artifacts by hand. However, the vast majority of your standard artifacts such as locations, data load rules, import formats, mappings, etc. can be migrated using Oracle’s FDM to FDMEE migration utility that Oracle released last fall. The migration utility is implemented using ODI but with a little coaching; even if you don’t know ODI, you could take what would ordinarily be a six-month migration/“upgrade” effort and condense that into a one- to two-month effort. Also, if there is enough time, we could give you an introductory tutorial on how to convert VBScript to Jython and/or how to create a custom report in FDMEE. This will be a live, hands-on demo.

Using APEX to Integrate Projections into an OBIEE Financials Dashboard
Teal Sexton, UC Berkeley

University of California, Berkeley is building an APEX form to integrate user-entered financial projections into OBIEE dashboard reports. Faculty will have up-to-date financial data including projected fund balances, particularly important for research and sponsored programs. The APEX form integrates with PeopleSoft HCM to automate the projections for employee salaries and benefits. RA’s can update, delete or add projection lines in a single form for a given faculty member’s full portfolio of funds. Upon hitting the “submit” button, the APEX application writes the projections into a staging table that triggers database updates and refreshes the OBIEE dashboard reports. Instantly, projections are factored into the calculations to give projected ending fund balances and more. The projected go-live for this functionality is March, 2016. The new functionality will efficiently provide faculty with 24/7 access to their projected ending fund balances for the first time at UC Berkeley!

Oracle SQLcl and SQL Developer Tips and Tricks
Jeff Smith, Oracle Corporation

This session has something for everyone. The DBA, the developer, the beginner, the expert – all will walk away with at least two or three new techniques in their favorite SQL-PL/SQL IDE and database GUI. I have fun doing this presentation, and I think you'll have fun participating or just soaking in some new things to try out. The presentation changes as the product updates, but the gist remains the same: Show folks the things they need to know to go from casual users to experts.

I guarantee each attendee that they will pick up two or three new things/techniques/tricks that will fundamentally change the way they use the tool. This adds up to a lot of saved time, and just as importantly, a happier end user.
