The job of an engineer is to make complex things simple.
For a DBA that often means scripting, including the occasional need to script outside the database.

Python is a great tool that can help here. It is an exceptionally well designed language that works well for both simple and fairly complex scripting tasks.
It can easily and seamlessly interface to all sorts of systems, including ORACLE databases, Hadoop clusters, HTTP servers, EC2 machines or S3 buckets. And if you seek logic, terseness and convenience, python is a sheer pleasure to work with.
