Time for Some New Graphs: Incorporating Time and Animation Elements into Your Web App Visualizations
Topic: Kscope14 Recordings
Owner: David Mann
Date: 2014-06-24
Subtopic: Application Express

Getting your point across visually is an increasingly important component of web applications. With the advent of browser standards such as HTML5, SVG, CSS, and JavaScript there are many open source packages available to help create custom visualizations.

These visualizations can be taken to a new level by adding the dimension of time. Adding this dimension can allow the user to animate exploration of previously static graphs, use movement to show changes over time, or provide interactive filtering facilities.

Concepts such as different ways that time elements can add value to static visualizations will be discussed. Implementation options will be covered including off the shelf Open Source along with basic and advanced custom code using web standard technologies.

The demo will cover analysis of a static visualization and implementing animation to show changes over time. The demo will be performed on Application Express but implementation points for other common web enabled languages will be highlighted.
