Jay Chapman, Sierra-Cedar

Jay.jpg

Campaign Statement

Throughout my short career as a consultant, ODTUG has nurtured and enriched my professional life and relationships. Yes, it’s the best technical user group in the world. But to me, it is much more. ODTUG is a vibrant intellectual community that facilitates collaboration and learning and connects me with my peers from around the world. It is also a user group where many seasoned individuals both on the consultant and client side give generously of their time and insights when it comes to Oracle products. Inspired by their example, I have tried to emulate that graciousness and selfless service to the organization through serving as:
• Kscope17-19 Presenter
• Kscope17-19 Ambassador
• Kscope19 EPM/BI Content Selection Team Member
• Meetup Host
• EPM Community Volunteer
• EPM Community Lead

Reinforced by my passion for ODTUG, my extensive, albeit limited, range of experiences within the organization and my commitment to its mission, I readily embrace the opportunity and challenge to serve on the ODTUG Board of Directors.

If elected, I would focus on ensuring every voice is heard and advocating for ways to promote mentorship to future generations. I believe both can be done by continuing and expanding our engagement of new, younger members through our communities and Kscope.

In closing, to preserve and enhance ODTUG so others can continuously experience the “wow” that I experienced at Kscope17 would be amazing. I want to ask for your vote for the ODTUG Board of Directors.

Questions

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?

An exciting Oracle user group where knowledge flows among peers.

What is your motivation for joining the board?

When I attended Kscope17 in San Antonio, I instantly knew that ODTUG was the user group that I wanted to be a part of. Through my involvement with the EPM Community and track selection committee, my passion for this wonderful group has increased ten-fold. My motivation for joining the board is to not only give back to ODTUG and help new members but to help my peers drive change to make Oracle and their products better.

What attributes do you feel you would bring to this position?

I have 15+ years of experience using Oracle products along with a sheer passion for seeing ODTUG succeed and thrive. I am also an engaging leader who sees all members as valued resources for the organization.

Do you have a principal goal you would like to achieve as a board member?

My primary goal is to increase engagement within ODTUG and to help new members feel the thrill and excitement of being a part of an organization where we can influence and drive change with Oracle products and share knowledge with our peers.

Please describe the traits, qualities, and experiences that qualify you to serve on the ODTUG Board.

When there is a passion for a cause, organizations like ODTUG can have a major positive impact on the technology community. Board members of these organizations need to hold the same passion, remain active in the community, and need to uphold the mission of the organization while providing the necessary insight and oversight. I hold each one of these traits, which I feel qualifies me to serve on the ODTUG Board. For example:

  • Passion: I love ODTUG, I love my peers, the friends I have made, presenting at and attending Kscope, and the education and knowledge sharing that comes from being a member of the organization. This love for ODTUG gives me the joy to want to serve our members and find ways to influence better the strategic direction and product management of the Oracle tools we use every day.
  • Remain Active in the community: As a consultant, I enjoy sharing information that I have learned with others. Two ways that I do that on a regular basis is through my blog and presenting at Kscope. I also remain engaged by serving as a volunteer in the ODTUG EPM Community.
  • Uphold the Mission: Some key takeaways from ODTUG’s mission are providing educational opportunities, timely access to the latest information, communication, and networking within the community. While on the board, I will continue to uphold these by continuing to strengthen and increase our regional meetups, find ways to improve our communication through newsletters and social media, provide more cross-collaboration between communities, and work with Oracle on providing ODTUG-specific webinars.

For the next two years I plan to focus on setting up ODTUG for continued success by ensuring the organization’s financial position is sound, and by applying my efforts towards an enhanced emphasis on emerging technologies. Roel Hartman, APEX Consulting

Roel.jpg

Campaign Statement

Since I rejoined the Board of Directors two years ago, a lot of things have happened. We have created a brand new Emerging Technologies track at ODTUG Kscope and we managed to run a very successful free Oracle Certification event at the last Kscope. And for a couple of years we have had the ODTUG Leadership Program, which supports members in taking the next step in their careers, both within ODTUG and within their own organizations.

These are just examples of the activities I have been involved in the last two years. And I really would like to continue!
ODTUG as an organization has some challenges ahead. We have to adapt to what happens in the outside world, as we did with Emerging Technologies, and we have to support and lead our members and conference attendees—that is you!—into the next decade. For instance, what can we do to make our conferences more sustainable? How can we embrace and support local initiatives like meetups? What does the movement to the cloud mean for our members and attendees, and what new challenges and opportunities linger on the horizon?

These kind of questions need to be addressed by the next board. I would love to be part of that, and I seek your support. Thus vote for the future. Vote for Roel. http://roelforodtug.com

Biography

Roel started a long time ago in the era of Oracle RDBMS 5. Since then, Roel has gained experience in building applications for end users. The last 10 years his focus has been on APEX.

Roel has been a speaker for Oracle conferences around the world, including ODTUG's Kscope for more than 10 years.
Next to that, within ODTUG he acted as the APEX content lead for Kscope14 and Kscope15 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors.

He keeps a blog at http://roelhartman.blogspot.com. In June 2009 Roel received an Oracle ACE award, in August 2010 he was appointed as Oracle ACE Director, and since June 2019 he has been an Oracle Groundbreaker Ambassador.
Roel is a co-writer of the Expert Oracle Application Express and Oracle Application Express for Mobile Web Applications books. He is director at APEX Consulting in The Netherlands. You can contact him at roel@apexconsulting.nl.

Questions

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?

The most important source of Oracle knowledge and networking.

What is your motivation for joining the board?

After having served for two years, I would like to continue serving the broader Oracle community and implementing the changes needed to make the organization ready for the future.

What attributes do you feel you would bring to this position?

I think ODTUG deserves a board with a broad insight of the Oracle ecosystem. As an ACE Director and Groundbreaker Ambassador I have direct contact with a lot of people within Oracle and easy access to a huge number of well-known people who use Oracle products in their daily lives. Next to that, I also attend and present at a lot of conferences around the globe - and now and then that gives me some ideas to implement in our own flagship conference: ODTUG Kscope!

Do you have a principal goal you would like to achieve as a board member?

I would like it if ODTUG would do (even) more for its members, making membership even more worthwhile.

Please describe the traits, qualities, and experiences that qualify you to serve on the ODTUG Board.

After this current two-year term, I am already a seasoned board member, no need for an introduction whatsoever; I can keep the flow going. Seniority and experience in other conferences is surely a benefit to the ODTUG organization.

I ask you, Oracle professional, for your vote so I can serve you on the ODTUG Board of Directors. I want to ensure continuity in leadership and maintain the excellence that ODTUG has achieved and we the members expect. You can count on me to make tough decisions to make this happen.

My first Kscope was San Antonio in 2012, and the experience changed me forever. The following year, I had the privilege of joining the APEX Track selection committee and was able to volunteer and get involved. It was a captivating and rewarding experience that set me off on a path of serving the ODTUG community. I was hooked and was able to volunteer two more years in the same capacity. Then in 2016, I stepped up to be APEX Track Lead for the next two years. One notable change I instituted was the "#LetsWreckThisTogether APEX Talks." They are short, dynamic, informative or inspirational presentations that keep a high level of audience engagement. This format still endures, and it's now the expected format.

The following two years, 2018 and 2019, were transformative, and I was able to serve a much wider audience as content chair for the APEX, Database, and Emerging Tech tracks. The main takeaway from serving as content chair was that all communities make ODTUG possible, and that diversity is what makes us strong.

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?
A community of Oracle professionals focused on service and education.

Being on the board of directors requires a significant commitment, one that I have embraced over the last three years. The board is made up of a diverse group of individuals with different backgrounds, priorities, and objectives. I'm also pretty handy when it comes to ODTUG's financial consolidation and planning batch processes in PBCS.

While the board undoubtedly benefits from new members, it is imperative that we blend fresh ideas with tenured experience.

Often times this centered on the first obvious means, attending and presenting at conferences. Early in my professional career, I sought to become more involved in shaping the direction of conference presentations by submitting abstracts and serving in content selection.

Now as I have matured professionally, I have been looking for opportunities to serve in my professional community in a greater capacity. I found ODTUG and Kscope after Hyperion was acquired and have attended Kscope since 2010, presenting and/or volunteering every year. During this time, I have gotten to know some on the ODTUG Board and have found they share my passion to give back to the community.

My goals as a board member are to continue the great initiatives put forth by previous members and to expand the outreach for new members. ODTUG is more than the annual conference, and I will work to bring awareness to the other opportunities and resources available within ODTUG.

I thank you for your support and vote so we can continue to make ODTUG the best professional organization for those who work with Oracle Development Tools.

Biography

First and for foremost, I am an educator who enjoys technology. I enjoy being able to share my knowledge with others. Secondly, I have been an Oracle ACE since 2017 and Oracle ACE Associate since 2015. Being an ACE is all about giving back to the community and sharing knowledge, which are part of my core beliefs

In the spirit of giving back, I have participated in the community service every year since my first Kscope in 2010. I have served on the content selection committee for BI/Analytics for seven years, and two of those years as content track lead for BI.

My involvement in the professional community as a presenter started in the early 2000s with BRIO and Hyperion conferences and continuing with Kscope, Analytics and Data Summit (BIWA), and OpenWorld.

Questions

How would you describe ODTUG in 10 words or less?

A community of professionals that feels like family

What is your motivation for joining the board?

I have been a volunteer in various capacities primarily centered around Kscope for the past nine years; I feel it's time to expand my involvement within ODTUG and serve at a higher capacity.

What attributes do you feel you would bring to this position?

As a consultant who specializes in Data Analytics, I will bring those skills to the ODTUG Board. I believe that there is an opportunity to leverage data analytics to help ODTUG be more efficient as an organization.

Do you have a principal goal you would like to achieve as a board member?

I will work to expand the meetups throughout the year and in geographic regions where membership or conference attendance is low.  I believe the regional community meetups are the best place to introduce people to ODTUG and bring them into the larger ODTUG community.

Please describe the traits, qualities, and experiences that qualify you to serve on the ODTUG Board.

I have been involved in the professional organizations as a contributing member in every industry I have worked in since I started my professional career over 25 years ago. I work well with all different personalities. My greatest strength is including others.  Additionally I do not believe in the phrase “That is how we have always done it.” I look for unique and out-of-the-box approaches to problem solving.
