Application Express

APEX at the ODTUG Kscope21 Virtual Event:

The ODTUG Kscope21 Virtual Event will continue to lead the pack by providing the best educational experience for Oracle APEX developers. This year, we’re going to make sure there is content available for all skill levels—from the beginner to the advanced APEX developer—so there is something for everyone.

In addition to the beginner track, we’re going to explore the more challenging issues that APEX developers face—such as integration, extensions, and lifecycle management & security. We’ll also continue to have a track dedicated to the core components of APEX, as they are some of the most powerful features of the tool and are often the most overlooked.

Beginner:

New to APEX? Or perhaps you’re a DBA or Java/JavaScript-focused developer and want to learn more about APEX? Then this track is for you! Sessions in the beginner track will target developers who are APEX newbies or those with minimal APEX experience. Sessions are focused mostly on the core components of APEX and blend lecture and demonstration, since seeing really is believing—especially with APEX.

APEX Core Components:

While there are many ways to integrate all kinds of things with APEX (see the Extensions/Integration track for examples), the core components of APEX should not be overlooked. This track highlights what can be done by staying “inside the box”—using only the core components of APEX and associated best practices. There’s no limit to the sophistication of the content here (we have a beginner track for the basics), so let your imagination run wild.

Extensions / Integration:

With Oracle APEX you rarely build a standalone application. In most cases, you need some integration, either with other products (e.g., MS Outlook, Google Calendar, SAP, Oracle eBusiness Suite), other technologies (e.g., REST), other platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), or even other languages and tools (e.g., Java, SQLcl, JavaScript). This track highlights ways to integrate with and extend the APEX platform by utilizing non-APEX technologies.

Lifecycle Management & Security:

Application development is not a discrete process anymore—with APEX or any other technology. With more and more emphasis being put on things like CI/CD & DevOps in general, can APEX play in that world? Of course it can! This track will highlight anything that has to do with the overall management of applications throughout their lifetimes—from configuration management to version control and DevOps. This track will also incorporate sessions focused on security, since security starts on day one and never ends.

Other Application Express:

Don’t see a category where your session fits? That’s perfectly fine—just tag it as other and we’ll have a look.

Database

Database at the ODTUG Kscope21 Virtual Event:

The Oracle Database RDBMS is the backbone for the vast majority of applications, solutions, and products for working with data, including the Oracle product suite itself. For everyone working with Oracle Database in one role or another, the Database track is the core of the ODTUG Kscope21 Virtual Event, bringing you the best and latest tools, tips, tricks, hacks, and techniques from practical field experience.

Presenters at the ODTUG Kscope21 Virtual Event will include the world’s best Oracle ACE Directors, ACEs, ACE Associates, Groundbreaker Ambassadors, product managers, and generally experienced people, all who have knowledge to relate and demonstrate within their fields, whether it be database administration, development, design, DevOps, or anything related to the Oracle RDBMS.

The track covers a number of sub-categories:

For the Modern DBA:

The role of a database administrator has always been a changing role, as Database versions over time have taken over a lot of the mundane and boring tasks—the Autonomous Database more so than ever. The DBA needs not only the traditional skills, but must also add a variety of new skills for the new roles of DevOps DBA, architect, or whatever task a skillful DBA can be given in the changing IT landscape.

At ODTUG Kscope21, we’ll tackle all the latest features and techniques in the newest versions of both database, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and Oracle Cloud interfaces relevant for the modern DBA. Topics can cover backup and recovery, security, hardware, software administration, identity management, high availability, performance tuning, upgrades, consolidation, storage, cloud, virtualization, scripting, multitenant, in-memory, database as a service, auditing, mixing on-premises and cloud, etc.

Database Development:

Development in, with, and around an evolving RDBMS such as the Oracle Database covers more and more varied ground as each version brings new capabilities inside the database. We’ve seen the database adapt new technologies, enabling the most modern development using built-in features. Applications access the database not just with SQL, but also REST and other APIs. Whether in the cloud or on-premises, a modern database developer needs knowledge of a broad variety of topics and concepts to create the performant applications the users of today desire.

ODTUG Kscope21 database development, among other topics, covers essential database development concepts and techniques, including application architecture and design, SQL, PL/SQL, REST API strategies, testing, debugging, logging, ETL, new features through the versions, version control, application performance, open source APIs, cloud-based development, programming languages, and frameworks to interface with database environments.

Database Design:

A good application using data starts with a good data model, leading to a good database design. To build a robust model based on business requirements, a developer must know how different model choices can impact how well the model can or cannot be expanded to match future requirements. DBAs, as well as developers, need knowledge on how different design strategies influence performance and scalability of the application.

Both theory and practice are covered on a range of topics in the field of data modelling and database design.

Database Tools:

Whether administering, developing, or designing databases, tools of all sorts are necessary to make life easier and more productive, both for the daily business and the once-in-a-while tasks of deploying, migrating, upgrading, and so on.

We’ll cover all the latest and best database tools used for interfacing with database environments, showing new features, usage methods, and tips for improving productivity. Both Oracle products as well as third-party tools are on the list of tools we cover, including SQL Developer, SQL Developer Data Modeler, SQLcl, DBArtisan, OraOpenSource (OOS), Oracle ORDS, TOAD, and more.

DevOps/Agile:

DevOps is a philosophy or approach that enforces the collaboration and communication between software developers and IT operations by automating the process of software delivery and infrastructure changes. DevOps influences the life of both DBA and developer in a world that demands agility.

Learn about topics such as operational strategy and development, review code merging, integration, testing, change management release approvals, infrastructure as code, application performance monitoring, and releasing automation configuration.

Other Database:

As a core track, the Oracle Database RDBMS covers a very broad variety of topics. Any topic that is not covered by the five sub-categories above is covered in the Other Database category.
