MySQL 8.0 New Features

December 9, 2020 | 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT

MySQL 8.0 made its debut in 2018 and has added a lot of useful features that you may not know about.  First is the data dictionary that keeps your meta data inside the database (good news: you can now have millions of tables in a schema; bad news: You can now have millions of tables in a schema). We enhanced the SQL with windowing functions for analytics, lateral derived tables, common table expressions, and more. There are dual passwords, histograms, the clone plug-in for ultra-fast replication to a secondary machine, hash joins, and much more. But you have to know about them before you can use them. And this is your chance to learn about these features and more.

Dave Stokes is a MySQL Community manager for Oracle Corporation and travels extensively to promote MySQL, speaking over thirty times each year for the past several years. He is also the author of MySQL & JSON - A Practical Programming Guide and the second edition was just made available for those wishing to take advantage of the JSON data type and the MySQL Document Store. With degrees in computer science and business, you used to find him in the pre-Covid days on the road at shows like FOSDEM, SCaLE, Confoo, PHP UK, Scotland PHP, PyCaribbean, or maybe your local meetup. He has recently started a MySQL basics series of videos available on YouTube.
